All those wonderful things that dont make you a good human being. A person who we see strive to make themselves a better person. Just underused. Good points. That said, the stolid approach to characterization has its benefits as well when an emotional outburst happens it can be devastating (see: Picards breakdowns in the likes of Family, Chain of Command, First Contact), but it also allows for subtler moments to have outsized impacts (Odo asking Garak to breakfast, Seven revealing her favorite color, Picards 1/4 smiles when no one is looking, Spocks eyebrow etc), which is also quite true to life. The writing for him is trying in season 1, but from Samaritan Snare onwards I actually think hes kinda endearing and has decent utility. Im sure nearly everyone of the crew of TNG had issues and problems. Trolls that bodyshame others are a lower life form. Star Trek: Discovery currently streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. She went away and supposedly became an amazing well rounded person. And I just let the writers take me on a journey. Sincerely, obesity is defined in terms of the proportion of body fat associated higher risk of illness. Like damn the guy's 90 ffs give him a break. Even though he is one of the worst characters in Trek, he was the main focus in arguably the best episode of Voyager: Timeless. Tilly is a Harry Kim, Wesley Crusher, Travis Mayweather sort of character at least for me. For what its worth Picard has an excellent cast, male and female, it just feels they are one or two notches above their discovery peers, maybe again due to writing/direction. The Klingon redesign was much more than a visual reboot and especially the tech aspects dont fit canon (holographic communication, Klingon cloaking, android bridge crew, easy terraforming, state-of-the-art nanotech, Enterprise battle squad). That is why you never saw councelors on any other class ship. I let go of my preconceptions about what star trek is. She is a real girl. That could explain the weight gain. The entire point of Tillys character is that shes a Starfleet officer that doesnt have to be a supermodel like so many Trek characters before: Troi, Seven, TPol, Jadzia perfect golden cut supermodels. Thats not a leader. However, Tilly's rise to Lieutenant in Thursday's episode of Star Trek: Discovery did not invoke feelings of joy. If there had been a believable logical progression from Cadet Tilly in season 1 to Starfleet Academy instructor in season 4, where they had built up the character to where she shed bits and pieces of the awkwardness as she became more confident in her abilities. Janeway is bridge crew, of course she was coming back! Definitely not a dig at the actress, she is only delivering what the directors and producers have asked her to deliver. Cant believe some fans complain about character A or B or C. I am sorry, but the obsessive complaining about Sonequa/Michael or Mary/Tilly, for who they are, is so rude. You know what, fvck you, Vulcan Soul. I really liked her in the first season. A rare, successful example of this is James Gunns Guardians otG and Suicide Squad, in which a similar premise is treated comedically yet with a touch of sincerity, so as not to devolve into outright farce. I think the ship can handle a little chonk. Me thinks that your issue is not that fans of nu trek are pandered to to feel better about themselves. This sounds kind of racist. Maybe not but what are your thoughts? And we saw the results of all that. Sonequa is by all accounts probably the best or one of the best chef de compagnie of all the Trek series. Barclay was another unrealistic character that never shouldve made it in to Starfleet. Andrew: Great, perceptive, thoughtful post! Im a human being, you know? Since you said mum Im going to assume youre in the UK, and I can personally confirm that you can get some great help, including face to face therapy, through the NHS, for free. In season three Tilly was first officer and then acting captain; how does all of that affect who she is in season four? New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery premiere on Thursdays on CBS All Access in the U.S. and on CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada, where it's also available to stream on Crave. My condolences to you, for your mum. Marys my TV crush for the last 3 years. But dont those characteristics fit better on a younger character, while the older one grows up and changes? Star Trek: Discovery actor Mary Wiseman has a - Daily Star Trek News Bullied badly as a child and teen so I know what I speak of; Im just glad I grew up pre-Internet, and I sympathize with any nowadays who have to deal with Internet bullying on top of real world bullying. By indicating that shes not ashamed of her body? This is rare case were I actually agree with Lorma. Keep up the great work ladies! The last novel just came out last year (where does she find the time lol). Fitness may be in the eye of the beholder, as hes commented himself that contempories his age have to hit the head just a bit more often. That could be it. Which I think would be a tremendous mistake. The door is open, I suppose, if that show should fail for some reason, but I doubt theyll just throw her back into the same role on the ship like nothing ever happened. Every Thursday night I yell Black Alert to let everyone know Im watching Star Trek. They just didnt do much with him. But Im just happy we are talking about Voyager again, especially since this show is basically a spin off of it! But the show almost seems to go out of its way every season for some of the dumbest story points you can think of. She strikes me as no different than Barkley. There are characters you really cherish and others that are fun but ultimately nothing special. Correct me if I am wrong, but did she not have to take a command course at some point? This show has been for a niche of Trek fandom not the mainstream. As I said Tilly has the same issues. The only thing she is qualified for at Starfleet Academy is as a 23rd century specialist. But respect is always earned and never enforceable. This was her character and then had perhaps one or two incidents where she became a little more focused and then off screen came back a different person. No spoilers in case I ever decide to actually the write the thing, but youd love it as a DS9 fan. It doesnt look like unhealthy curvy but just different type of genes. Tillys character arc was mishandled once they realized Mary Wiseman was cast (Marys a decade or more older than Tilly). But Tilly and the nervous mess Adira has devolved into? I suppose thats why some places are rising and others are very visibly in decline. The Delta Quadrant is a dangerous place, and the remnants of species and societies that survived around the edges of the Borg network and incursions were harsh and justifiably skeptical of the Federations. It is incredibly bad and is a publicly dangerous message to be sending. Mary Wiseman: That experience affects her so much this season. As you put it: I love how Disco has put the human back into the human experience. And I agree wholeheartedly. I guess making Tilly first officer isnt anywhere close to ridiculous as making KT Kirk a Captain who was still a cadet and had probably spent 2 weeks in space before he got the jobbut its pretty damn close. 'Star Trek: Discovery': Mary Wiseman on Tilly's Big Career Decision Well, Renos really more engineering. She let go in S4 of her parents expectations and embraced a new purpose. All are Trek! Ive finally had the chance to reply to your comment about Lue Elizondo etc on the other thread. I have only heard of the details a few months ago thanks to a video that TrekCentral (amazing YouTube channel) made about it for Prodigy theorizing a connection. It would definitely be great if Rhys was promoted to first officer. However, the problem with Tilly (and this really is more of a Star Trek Discovery problem because it exists with every character they do this to) is that she never made strides or attempts to improve. While Tilly had big dreams in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, she struggled with feelings of inadequacy and was hindered by a social awkwardness that often left her feeling like an outsider. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. But Barclay is just irritating as hell. Is Mary Wiseman Pregnant? Weight Gain And Pregnancy Rumor Of The Whereas Tilly is an oh shes just like me and validates all my insecurities so its ok to be as I am. And tons dont. Age is affecting my memory haha. Finally, actress Rekha Sharma shared this fun behind-the-scenes photo with Doug Jones and David Benjamin Tomlinson, where she lamented Landry being killed off yet again. Yes but Star Trek shouldnt be about lazy writing, poor character development and bad storytelling. I assume my feelings towards them are what Wesley-haters endure. I never thought of Adira as being all that similar, but I see your point. Sonequa Martin-Green in Unification III, Co-showrunner Michelle Paradise shared some behind-the-scenes photos from Terra Firma, Part 2.. New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery premiere on Thursdays on CBS All Access in the U.S. and on CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada, where it's also available to stream on Crave. My best advice is to give some of the Litverse books a try and decide for yourself which writers appeal to you. Just more pandering. The show will roll out on Paramount Plus in the US, and is expected to stream on Netflix elsewhere. But the characters are pitch perfect. After they wrote her to be the most annoying person possible. Regarding fans, tons of them love Tilly. In fact most of their fears and phobias were explored in various episodes. It always cracks me up when people say that they hate Tilly. By: Laurie Ulster Theyve written Tilly as just the straight oh theres Tilly for the jokes. They made an insensitive statement about her body and called her a promoter of an unhealthy lifestyle. Im not the idiot fringe but her weight is none of our business (and, also, she had a baby before S3, I believe). Probably some admirals cousin. Two Kelpians and a Disco Kenny (Zero Kelpians were harmed during this shoot. She hopped over those 900 years. Im proud to see that shes proud of herself. I feel bad saying this but Ive never a read a Star Trek novel in my life lol. Do I want to be Barclay or Harry Kim? Its gotten very stale now. Shes a geeky, nerdy character, so wonderfully over the top, like so many of us in the fandom. But I have to say, when they named her Killy, it made the already off-kilter character even more ridiculous. Bad writing, illogical story arcs, unbalanced tempo, underdeveloped characters or sudden jumps in character development. And yeah, some of us are coach potatoes, most of us certainly not gold cut supermodels. To be clear, my opinion on a show has no bearing on how it helped you at a terrible time in your life. Promoting her to the first officer was stupid enough, but now shes leading at the Academy? KevinB: I let go of my preconceptions about what star trek is.. In fact most iterations of Trek the actors have provided a neutral delivery of their native accent. I think the character would have been much better served if Tillys quirks were something that changed as the character grew over the seasons. Key difference in thinking, and it makes all the difference in the big picture! Even Picard has his own show. However, if we got to see Tilly gradually improve herself. I tried watching Star Trek Discovery but can't anymore. I find it to be DSC has a wonderful cast and a neat diverse set of characters. I love Tilly. I like seeing her in the series and like knowing that girls who are considered chunky by their teen or tween peers will know they can become something special and respectable, even if they dont have the ideal Hollywood body type. It was the fall of 2017 and my non-Trekkie wife, Lisa, had begrudgingly agreed to watch Star Trek: Discovery with me, having heard me talk nonstop about how excited I was for Trek's return to TV.We were on the third episode, "Context is for Kings," when she appeared. I admit, has been a roller coaster between each season. Youre perfect as you are. :-), What, you mean you dont follow your patients around at work, giving suggestions? I did, though. Because Book is someone who doesnt just have cerebral, intellectual intelligence. Mary Wiseman is confirmed to return as Sylvia Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, although whether she rejoins the crew or continues at Starfleet Academy and only interjects occasionally remains unknown. None of those thinks make a lick of sense. Why did they do that? Plus, TNG literally had a therapist as part of the bridge crew. Obesity and overweight are associated with health chronic issues by definition. The audience is growing due to our amazing loyalty, but I give them credit toobecause Discovery, we have all these new shows. And second of all, just to dig into it, you dont always get to see a woman like me in that sort of position. Not holding my breath hes given the job though, especially since we know Saru is coming back. And it all happened OFF SCREEN! I expect that well have her in the world and all of those things. Makes sense. I agree, in fairness Barclay was relatable in many ways, socially awkward but not too overplayed. I would imagine those who liked Barclay probably include a large portion of those who like Tilly. Her character Tilly is not my favorite on the show but body shaming is a shameful act by itself. The burden is now on SNWThat show can either make or break it with regards to these issues. Definitely a character created for the TikTok generation to like.. high five, hugs and ditziness with lots of over emotional feelings on display. But it would seem to me that it might ought to be standard practice to have a Betazed on the bridge on all starships if those stills were so needed. You misunderstood. Im relieved to say I have no idea how that feels, and its something I cant even stomach thinking about, frankly. So smart in the Starfleet tradition. I think Saru holds out as being the most consistent, and Tilly is close, but not quite. When a show blankets the airwaves with hugs and confessionals and cheering it tends to make any subtler moments stand out far less, but this is also not a subtle show to begin with. If Tilly needed to pick up a phaser or be physically active then that means the Discovery is in some serious shit, with it either having been boarded and their entire security personnel neutralised, or with Tilly separated from the ship, most like due to its destruction. The increasingly repeated notion that Discovery has saved the Trek franchise with emotion and humanity is dubious revisionist history. Agreed. Not with DSC, not with ANYTHING. However, even if the Academy series moves forward, it likely wouldnt go into production in 2022 or even 2023, leaving plenty of time for Tilly to appear in season five of Discovery. But because of Discovery we have Lower Decks, Picard, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, Short Treks, possibly Section 31 and the Academy show. When Mary Wiseman's Lt. Sylvia Tilly left the USS Discovery for a job at the new Starfleet Academy in the fourth episode of season four, it was promised she would be back. A Stitch in Time kicks off the Garak/Cardassian books and is excellent. I suspect that Prodigy may use some of the elements that Beyer expanded or created for Full Circle without actually developing any of the overall story arc. David, Can we expect any surprising uses of the special things that Book can do in season four, now that he can control the spore drive? I keep reading she shouldnt be in Starfleet because she is socially and emotionally immature. Sonequa is a great actress. For someone who is supposed to care about others, shes been remarkably stuck in her own emotions. Mary Wiseman: Right, when you use empathy for evil, its manipulation. Barclay was funny and silly but relatable due to his social anxiety. As someone with severe and sometimes crippling anxiety whos managed to have a pretty successful high-pressure career, I question your assertion that she never would have graduated Starfleet., You clearly never served in a military environment. And to have somebody step in and defend you is really meaningful. You are always very insightful. I think Saru will just be the surrogate first officer again although he is now a captain. Diplomacy? I hate the body shaming of actresses Theres recently was yet another fanboy arse-hat bloger who on their twitter account made an unkind comment about Mary/Tilly regarding her weight. You know, like a psychotic murderer? Be sure to watch Mary Wiseman "Killying it" as Ensign Sylvia Tilly on Star Trek: Discovery. It was so fun. Any accent would be acceptable for a time that hasnt happened yet. Watch as SFX makeup transforms Doug Jones into Saru for Star Trek: Discovery. And I felt that was ridiculous. And now, with only three years under her belt in the field, From future Starfleets POV, thats 900 years! Harry wasnt annoying. You had a variety of body shapes on discovery Tilly was thick. Its one thing thats definitely been improved upon by the more recent stuff. Its shall we say very variable. Exactly. Star Trek is supposed to be socially progressive but this show went too far. The writers may love the character, but they also appreciate that the actor is a real person who might want variety in their career. Im sorry I can sugarcoat it. GD, what shoes is David wearing in those pics? Troi made explicit the evil intent lies we tell each other and ourselves to gain selfish material and political advantage. To me, at least. But my point was that she rarely conveyed anything useful or something that was not already obvious to all. Assuming you are American, Im from outside America where it makes a huge difference in how the characters comes across.America is not the world as Morrissey once said. No one can be expected to sugarcoat reality for you, and your attitude to people who dont is very indicative that you need someone to help you with that. Theres a difference between celebrating obesity and accepting individual human beings, treating them as human beings, and not targeting them specifically for emotional harassment. Im sure many may NOT be a Janeway but could at least look at her and say thats what I aspire to be. He also has emotional intelligence. If you cant deal with the idea of conflicting opinions then I really dont think you should be online at the moment. Tillys anxiety got old real fast. I know everyone is different but for me, once I hit my mid-30s my metabolism slowed down, so I had to cut back on the amount of food I ate compared to when I was 25. Happy to have your wit, enthusiasm, & talent as part of the franchise. 71 comments so far. It included a lot of the old characters too like Chakotay, BElanna, Tuvok with a lot of new characters. Star Trek Cast's Weight Gain Story Understanding? I am a therapist in real life, and even *I* think it was crazy that they had a therapist on the bridge. Id add Kirk to that at several times over the years. Wiseman possess voluptuous hourglass shaped figure. Just take a little trip down the hellhole that is a tabloids message boards and youll see the kind of body shaming of male and female actors and celebrities that exists out there. How does Tillys scientific mind come into play in solving the crisis of the anomaly in season four? Mary Wiseman: That was a really good teaser. I didnt like Reed from Enterprise, does that make me a troll? It was a novelty in his first story and they turned it on its head when he got zapped and made super-smart, but most of the time hes very trying, especially when he gets thrown onto Voyager. I cant spoil anything into season five, except to say that we love Tilly. Its been sooo inconsistent from day one. Tilly's Discovery Season 4 Exit & Season 5 Future Explained Her message was not that its okay to be overweight (and shes really not that overweight, nor should it really matter), but simply thats it okay to be her flaws and all. Let's get into the details of the actress's weight gain, which has also been linked to her pregnancy. Overweight and obesity are not a matter of looks or body shape, and those who feel free to body-shame are off-side and frequently unkind. The message she is sending how? If I was a public figure I would do zero social media, ignore the internet, cash my massive paychecks, sign autographs for real in-person fans I meet, and be so thankful Im not working in a grunt job making minimum wage. https://t.co/zV56ClHoUZ, Kate Mulgrew (@TheKateMulgrew) December 18, 2020. 89. The U.S.S. Funny enough, I have never had a problem with Wesley. What was your point to this comment, anyway, except to minimize and dismiss support for plus-size women? Its a tricky one, as someone who is outside America and didnt have English as the first language growing up its more noticeable.
